Hanuman means the one who has swollen or disfigured jaw. The name
Hanuman is derived from the “Hanuamata”, a Sanskrit word in which “Hanu” means
jaw and “Mata” means disfigured. When angered Indra stuck Hanuman Jee with a
lightning bolt, his cheek and jaw was injured. Therefore, he is known as
Hanuman, however his birth name was Maruti.

Hanuman Jee had five brothers. The names of his four real brothers
were Matiman, Srutiman, Ketunam, and Drtiamn. Bheema, the son of Pandu and
Kunti during Mahabharata period had also been known as the brother of Hanuman
Jee as both Lord Hanuman and Bheema were born by the grace of Pawan Dev.
Hanuman jee was the eldest one among all brothers.

Hanuman Jee was father of a son Makar Dhwaja. His son was born to
a mighty fish. The story behind this is that after burning Lanka, when Hanuman
Jee cooled off his body by dipping his tail in the sea, at that time his sweat
was swallowed by the said fish and hence his son was conceived. This fish was
caught by Ahiravana, a step brother of Ravana’s. When Ahiravana cut the fish,
Makar Dhwaja was born. As Makar Dhawaja grew, his strength and virility
impressed Ahiravana and he made Makar Dhawaja his Soldier.

Hanuman Jee is also known as Bajrangbali. The story behind this is
that one day he saw Sita Jee applying sindoor on her forhead for Lord Rama’s
long life. After seeing this, he thought if he would apply sindoor on his whole
body then the life of Lord Rama can be prolonged. As sindoor is also called as
Bajrangbali, therefore sindoor is also offered to Hanuman Jee while worshipping
him.

Vishwamita was the guru of Lord Rama. As he was also a king that’s
why Narada asked hanuman Jee to greet all the sages except Vishwamitra. But
Vishwamitra became angry with Hanuman Jee. Due to this, Vishwamitra asked Lord
Rama to give death penalty to Hanuman Jee. Lord Rama cannot ignore his Guru’s
order, so he tried to punish Hanuman Jee with his arrows. Seeing the arrows
coming towards him, Hanuman Jee started chanting Ram! Ram! And the arrows did
not hurt Hanuman Jee. After seeing this, Lord Rama used Brahmastra to punish
him. It was also failed due to Ram! Ram! Chanting by Hanuman Jee. Then, Narada
felt guilty and told Vishwamitra the whole story and confessed his mistake. He
asked Vishwamitra to stop his order.
